DISCLAIMER
The listing of these products is for informational purposes and individuals must use their own caution and judgment when using these resources. Functional levels and changes in judgment and reasoning are highly variable in people with dementia. Interventions must be individualized and continually assessed because those that are effective for some individuals may only work briefly and may not work at all for others.

DESCRIPTION
No rinse body baths, shampoos, and towellettes (body wipes) have been successfully used in many circumstances where access to water is either not available or inconvenient. No rinse products have been used in hospitals and in nursing homes with excellent results. No rinse products are gentle on the skin; many contain both cleaning and moisturizing agents, important for aging skin. A shampoo hair cap is also available that can be warmed in a microwave.

Although geared for healthcare professionals, family caregivers can benefit from viewing these videos. Please note, however, that these videos are not dementia specific and do not include special instructions essential for people with dementia. To keep you and the person you care for relaxed, be sure to keep the person warm and use good communication skills, letting him or her know what will happen, each step of the way. Smiling and talking in a warm and reassuring voice can help.

How to Use No-Rinse Shampoo

WHAT WE LIKE
Easy replacement for showers/baths
  • For those who are bedbound

  • When the bathing area is inaccessible or unsafe to use

  • When the person gets upset by the bathing experience
Avoids messy baths with water in the bed

Available as body soap (liquid and towellettes) and hair shampoo (liquid and shampoo cap)

POTENTIAL CONCERNS
Some caregivers tell us that you still need to have the person’s haired washed (some use a beauty salon) once in a while to get the hair really clean.

CAUTION
When microwaving the towellettes and hair cap, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and be sure to test before using to make sure they're at a safe temperature to use.

How We Tested

"ThisCaringHome.org tested many products that are commonly recommended for best practices to identify the best use of these products and any potential problems in their use by caregivers and individuals with dementia. Each product included in an Expert Review was tested in a home environment, either an apartment or a single family home (or both), by at least two people. Rosemary Bakker, interior designer, gerontologist and dementia specialist, was one of the testers for every product. Whenever possible, we tested the product over time, sometimes days, weeks, or months, for:
  • Ease of use
  • Reliability
  • Potential safety issues
As a result of our testing, we're listing the pros and cons for using these products and including safety precautions for various products. These products were not tested by persons with dementia. We hope in the future to do case studies to learn more about what works and what doesn't work in a larger variety of caregiving situations and home environments."

Products listed on our website but not tested by ThisCaringHome.org are referred to as "Product Listings".
