Q. From whom do I order a hospital bed?
A. For Medicare Coverage, you must order your bed from a Medicare Enrolled and Participating Supplier.
If a supplier of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) doesn't accept assignment, there is no limit to what you can be charged. You also may have to pay the entire bill (your share and Medicare's share) at the time you get the DME. Note: Ask if the supplier is a participating supplier in the Medicare program before you get durable medical equipment. If the supplier is a participating supplier, they must accept assignment. If the supplier is enrolled in Medicare but isn't "participating," they have the option to accept assignment.
If the supplier isn't enrolled in Medicare, Medicare won't pay your claim. To find a supplier that is enrolled in the Medicare Program, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Q. How much does Medicare pay?
A. Medicare (Part B) generally pay up to 80% of the approved charge for a hospital bed with a doctor's prescription if you order the hospital bed from an "enrolled and participating supplier" in the Medicare program. Your care receiver's supplemental insurance (or your care receiver) pays the balance.
Your care receiver must meet certain eligibility requirements for each of the different types of hospital beds for insurance coverage. Ask your health care provider if your care receiver qualifies, or look at the requirements online at http://www.medicare.gov/coverage/Home

Q. Do I rent or buy a hospital bed?
A. For certain kinds of durable medical equipment, like wheelchairs or hospital beds, Medicare will pay for the rental of the item for up to 13 months. After 13 months rental, you will own that equipment. Once you own the item, Medicare will make reasonable and necessary maintenance and servicing payments, as needed, on your equipment.
