| Locations NOT to Install |
Smoke alarms aren't recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, or garages where steam or cooking and exhaust fumes could set off false alarms. They also are not recommended for unheated spaces (e.g., attics), where humidity and temperature changes might affect the detector's operation.

| 2 TIPS |
- You may need to maintain the smoke alarm if the person is unable to do it themselves. Because it can be an inconvenience to change the batteries twice a year, the Center for Disease Control recommends using alarms with lithium batteries, which last 10 years.
- Make sure to post instructions in large type as to what to do if the alarm sounds because the person with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia may forget.
